sunni patterson tells it like it is, whether we want to hear it or not. sometimes, her anger startles me. but then i remember what she is talking about, and i realize that it is my own complicity that makes me uneasy.
why is it so hard for us to accept the fact that the universe is asking us to undergo a complete and total revolution? why is it so hard for us to support each other in this journey? what must be done to make it happen, to do the work that needs to be done, individually and collectively?
in love (and questions),

"The House of Beauty" - Mark Doty
nobody reads a poem like mark doty. it's as if he is speaking each word for the first time, careful not to waste any sounds that might be missed by speaking without care. if you like poetry at all and you've never been to the dodge poetry festival, you haven't lived. it's sacred and holy. people get together for five days and read poetry to each other. what is better than that?

Coded Language - Saul Williams
i needed to get into a poetry writing mood, so i found this little gem. although i've been having mixed feelings about saul williams recently, i.e. his nike endorsement and sub par album release, it cannot be said that he is asleep. i had the blessing to meet saul, and i asked him, "how can you be so sure that revolution is coming?" to which he replied, "have you ever read the tao te ching?" to which i replied, "yeah, a while ago." to which he replied, "maybe you should read it again."
we are the equivalent of three buckets of water and a hand full of minerals.
the last two minutes and twenty seconds is the best part.
where do you find transcendence? or rather, where do you transcend dance?

"What Was Said to the Rose" - Rumi (Read by Coleman Barks)
this is a simple video, just a gradual close-up on a rose.
but when these words wrap around my heart, i start to see more than the rose. i see my mother and my father. i see my heroes and sheroes, alejandra, carl, and stacie. i see my first love. i see my hardship and yours. i see my friends that i've known since grade school, and i see the woman working at the desk next to me. i see the universe and the heart. i see the rain and the earth.
but most of all, i see that rose unfurling, opening itself to the beckoning flirtations of the sun, sighing "ahhhh...." just under its breath.
this is where we live.
this is where we come from.
